Meet John

Kilkenny runs through my veins – quite literally. My family has lived here for generations, with ties to the city’s iconic Smithwick’s brewery that span over a century…

A Heritage of Hard Work

  • My great-great-grandfather worked as an engine driver.
  • My great-grandfather served as a stoker, fueling the brewery’s engines.
  • My grandfather held the position of yard foreman, overseeing the brewery’s daily workings.
  • My father was the racking plant supervisor, ensuring everything ran smoothly.

These connections have given me a deep appreciation for Kilkenny’s industrial and cultural heritage, which I bring to every tour. When I guide you through the brewery’s story, it’s not just history—it’s personal.

Being a tour guide is more than just a job for me; it’s a calling. I’ve always been fascinated by Kilkenny’s rich past, and reading about its history is one of my greatest joys. This passion, combined with my professional training, ensures that every tour I lead is as informative as it is enjoyable.

I hold a Diploma in International Hotel Management and Business Studies, as well as a BA in Language Studies. I’m also a certified national tour guide, qualified through Kilkenny ETB. But what truly sets me apart is my ability to connect with people and make history come alive, whether we’re standing in front of Kilkenny Castle or exploring hidden gems tucked away in the city’s cobblestone streets.

Why I Guide

For me, guiding is about more than sharing information — it’s about creating connections. Kilkenny has so much to offer, from its medieval landmarks to its artisan spirit, and I want every visitor to experience the same wonder and pride I feel as a local.
Through stories, laughter, and a few surprises along the way, I strive to make every tour a journey into the heart of Kilkenny.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, I promise to make your time here memorable.
